Submerged Stories and Shipwrecks: River Torridge - Sailing Through Storms
The HF Bolt was a ketch, a small wooden sailing ship, named after the captains two daughters, Harriett and Florence. She sailed out of the North Devon port of Appledore in the late 19th Century, heading across the Atlantic to Canada. Where the crew would buy salt cod to sell in Spain and Portugal. In sixty-nine years of sailing the little boat would battle gales, see her captain arrested for brawling and be wrecked within sight of her home port, only to be refloated and have the salt-damged cargo sold for a profit.
