Description

Surveyed in 2006 and again in 2008 as part of the Forton Lake Archaeology Project 2006-2009 - FL23. The 2008 survey recorded the vessel as 9.20 m long and 2.40 m wide. The vessel is constructed of a steel plate outer hull, but the wooden inner skin is no longer present. The vessel has three main transverse bulkheads and one main longitudinal bulkhead; however, very little remains of the forward bulkhead. The main hold of the vessel is 4.90 m long by 2.40 m wide. Behind the aft bulkhead are the engine compartment and the coxswain's position, which have a raised coaming above them (Beattie-Edwards & Satchell 2011, 56-59).

Bomb Scows were used for ferrying bombs and depth charges to and from marine aircraft at their moorings during the Second World War. The craft had a low freeboard to enable it to be manoeuvred under the wings of the aircraft to be bombed up (loaded). The bombs were stowed on racks in the bomb well and were hoisted out of the scow by the bomb winches on the aircraft (Air Ministry 1952)
