Description

Remains of an Engine House, marked on 1877 survey and is probably in association with the tramway and tin recovery work. The remains are currently visible at the high water mark due to rapid erosion of the overburden and are also suffering from storm damage. The site is not shown on the 1906 OS map so may have been demolished or covered by waste from nearby works. Approximately 1/3 of the length is still buried. Exposed long stone wall with one contracted opening/doorway. The south west corner of the wall is eroded and damaged where wall thinner as there appears to be a wheel pit present. Also have remains of iron tiedown bolt. End walls of structure visible along with one internal wall to south west of doorway. Wooden post remains outside the building correspond to an annex shown on the early map, they are eroded to beach level. This structure is in a very exposed position and being rapidly eroded at spring tides. The remains are on the foreshore on a very dynamic coastline, from the 1877 OS survey to present the high water mark has advanced some 200ft. The feature was recorded by Ieuan Harries and Imogen Rogers.

Continued observation of the site after stormy weather is essential to record further sections as the sea clears the site. It could vanish as a structure in as little as two years.
