A shaped concrete block holding the remains of a wooden post which would formerly able to be hoisted to vertical.
According to information given during a tour of the lighthouse the post was the Coastguard storm warning post and would have been topped with a red cone which was raised aloft to top of post by Coastguard in order to warn mariners of impending storm conditions forecast.
Originally recorded as a rocket post in the data imported into the CITiZAN database. The Ordnance Survey map 6" to 1 mile map of 1887 (http://maps.nls.uk/) shows a post in the same place, labelled 'flagstaff'.
