30/03/2017 - The Calshot anchorage comprises two features.- The foreground wooden structure held the end of the cables in place. Approximately 140 wooden beams (between 16 and 24ft long) were driven down into the beach to provide sufficient stability for 4 boom cables (Hawsers) stretching across Southampton Water to a structure called a Dolphin. Each cable was approx three and a half inches in diameter. The middle ground behind the fisherman shows what remains of the foundation for the pier wich originally rose around 25ft above beach level. This structure provided a fixed height 'prop' for the 4 cables. The two upper cables were supported 8 ft above the lower cables. Each pair of cables were held 16ft apart horizontally on the pier. In the distance across the other side of Southampton Water at Hook (Bungalow Battery) an identical anchor and pier construction held a similar set of cables. All of these cables terminated at two Dolphins located in the channel. Separate cables then ran between the Dolphins to provide a complete barrier.
