12/03/2016 - Commander Mansfield Cumming would have surveyed this scene in great detail prior to WW1. In 1906 a number of his boom defence vessels arrived in the Hamble tributary of Southampton Water in readiness to defend the area from attack. By 1910 he had organised a permanent cable boom stretching from Bungalow Battery to Calshot Castle on the opposite shoreline. Cumming was in his element but then he was invited by the director of naval intelligence to set up the British Secret Service.
