Brick Works, Copperas Works, South Shore, Brownsea Island. 3m wide pit with vertical sides and a flat base eroding from a small cliff on the southern shore. The site was investigated by the National Trust in 2005 and is thought to have been used in the process of extracting copperas. The 2005 report notes: 'The feature consisted of a 3m wide pit [311] with vertical sides 0.9m deep and a flat base. In the centre of the pit was laid a single course of bricks to create a level floor [306] 2.2m wide. Built off the edge bricks of this floor was a brick lining [308] and the space between this brick skin and the cutting for the pit was filled with clay (309). The floor was made of bricks measuring 220 by 105 by 60mm without frogs. The walls were made of bricks measuring 240 by 120 by 70mm and the underside of the bricks had been hollowed out more in the form of a channel or flue than of a frog, with the surface of this concavity coated with soot. This evidence indicated that the bricks were used to channel heat through the feature and that the structure may have been used as an evaporation tank'.
The tank has eroded since the 2005 survey, a large brick surface was recorded to the east of the 'tank' in 2005 and today only a few bricks remain.
