Description

The Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse, dated 1900, is situated on the south side of Stanley Dock. Built in front of the existing Stanley Warehouse after part of the dock had been filled in, the Tobacco Warehouse is on such a massive and heroic scale that it dominates the landscape in this part of Liverpool. Regarded as the largest warehouse in the world, it is constructed from red and blue brick on a high rusticated stone base and is of fourteen storeys with 42 bays divided by seven loading bays; the construction accounted for 27 million bricks, 30,000 panes of glass and 8,000 tons of steel. The warehouse, which could accommodate 60,000 hogsheads of tobacco, was designed by A. G. Lyster, the Dock Engineer.
