Description

St Patrick’s Chapel is thought to have been constructed in the 8th century and enlarged to the east and west approximately a century later. The layout of the walls of the original chapel suggests a small, rectangular building with an internal length of 4m and internal width of 2.4m, narrowing to 2.2m at the western end. Fragments of painted wall plaster where recovered from demolition rubble associated with this earliest phase, suggesting that the chapel would originally have been highly decorated. The chapel was renovated in the 1860s by Reverend Royds. A John Royds was rector of St Peters Church from 1858-1865 and a Charles Twemlow Royds was rector from 1865-1900. A further period of restoration was conducted in 1903. St Patrick’s Chapel is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I Listed Building; the Scheduled Area includes a total of eight Grade I Listed body-shaped, rock-cut graves.

The east gable wall, most of the south wall, and the east part of the north wall survive to heights of between 3m and 4m. Other walls survive as foundations with adjacent rock cut graves and a burial ground.
