Description

A jetty running out into the sea from beneath the post medieval alum quarries at Sandsend. The site consists of a line of substantial, paired, rock-cut postholes in the foreshore, extending from the base of the sea cliff out to the low water mark. The postholes must mark the position of a former jetty, probably one connected with the alum trade; since no jetty is depicted on the 1856 OS or later maps, it presumably predates that time. The line of a rectangular cut, now infilled by eroded shale, is visible in the top of the cliff above the start of the jetty, and would seem to be connected with it.
