Description

The first dock of Liverpool was designed by Thomas Steers and covered an area of 1.4 hectares was designed to harbour 100 ships. Construction started in 1710 and it was opened in 1715, but it not completed until 1716. It was rectangular in plan, accessed via gates from a tidal basin. The dock was the world's first commerical enclosed dock, designed for loading and unloading at any state of tide. The dock was infilled during the 1820s and the site, now known as Canning Place, was used for John Foster Junior's Greek Revival Custom House which was built in 1828-39. The building was destroyed following bomb damage during World War II. The site was used for office development during the late 1960s, this is now demolished.
