Canning Graving Docks Numbers 1 and 2, built 1765-9, lengthened in 1813 by John Foster, and deepened by Jesse Hartley in the 1842. They have stepped stone sides with granite barrel runs, three ro each side. Located around the quay are large boilers, dated 1810, for heating the tar to coat ships' hulls. Closed in 1965, the graving docks are now part of the Merseyside Maritime Museum who keep the foormer pilot boat, the Edmund Gardner of 1953 in No. 1 Graving Dock and the schooner De Wadden, 1917, in Graving Dock No. 2.
