Description

The Memorial to the Heroes of the Marine Engine Room, unveiled in 1916, was originally conceived as a monument to the thirty two engineers of the Titanic (built in Belfast for the Liverpool based White Star Line) who stayed at their posts when it sank on the night of 12 April 1912. However, World War I broke out before its completion, and its dedication was widened to include all maritime engine room fatalities incurred during the performance of duty. Sculpted by Sir William Goscombe John, the monument consists of a granite obelisk topped by a gilded flame while, at the corners, nude figures depict Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

Update (06/06/2019)-

Field visit undertaken on 29 May 2019. The memorial is features extensive bomb splinter damage from the Second World War.
