Mersea Island Coastal Defences Walking Workshop
07/11/2021 | 9 a.m.
Cudmore Grove Country Park
The coast of England is peppered with reminders of our wartime past. Invasion by German forces was considered a real possibility by 1940 and protecting the nation against this looming threat was placed in the hands of General Ironside. Much of the network of defences he designed is still visible today, particularly in the South-East of England where invasion was most likely to occur.
On this two hour walking workshop we will be learning how to identify and record coastal defences, using the many examples found at Cudmore Grove Country Park. This is a practical workshop with lots of opportunities to get involved and talk to the CITiZAN team about local heritage and changes on the Mersea foreshore.
Please dress appropriately for the weather as the event will only be cancelled in case of lightning. Walking boots or wellies recommended. We will be meeting in the Cudmore Grove Country Park carpark.
