Workshop: Benfleet Creek Salvation Army jetty

17/08/2017  |  10 a.m.

Leigh on Sea/Benfleet Creek, Essex

Over this free training day you’ll learn more about CITiZAN and how to record archaeological sites and features with our mobile app and with the equivalent paper forms. No previous experience is needed - just enthusiasm! People who'd like to use the CITiZAN app on their smart phones/tablets will need to register as a CITiZAN surveyor before the event.

Morning session

10.00 Meet at the Fishermen's Chapel, New Road Methodist Church, New Road, Leigh-on-Sea, SS9 2EA. The nearest car park is Belton Bridge, SS9 2EH where charges apply. It's almost opposite the chapel; please be careful when you cross the road!

After settling in with tea, coffee and biscuits you'll hear more about the CITiZAN project including what we've been up to on the Thames and in Essex. Then we'll take a look at CITiZAN's recording system and how to record features to add detail to our interactive online map. We’ll break at 12.00 for a picnic lunch in the chapel, with and informal question and answer session.

It's possible to come just for the morning session - we'll have a short practical to record the chapel, so you won't miss out on seeing how the app and our recording forms work.

Afternoon session

13.00: Drive to Leigh Marshes  carpark (minibus seat available for those without transport, parking free after 10am). We’ll then walk along Hadleigh Ray/Benfleet Creek to the remains of the Salvation Army jetty to record remains with the CITiZAN app. It’s a c. 1.5 mile walk with a good footpath. Low tide is at 14.35, so we’ll be able to spot any other features to record along the way, or on the way back.

If you have any questions or would like to sign up email me, Lara, at lband@mola.org.uk
