Three of the UK’s coastal community research projects have pulled together to share how our coasts and those who live along our shoreline face and understand the changes, risks and challenges brought on by climate change. Through years of work of researchers from social and natural science, CITiZAN (England), SCAPE (Scotland) and CHERISH (Wales/Ireland) intend to promote the importance of heritage and working with communities through showcasing what climate resilience means to coastal communities and places, and how the social sciences is critical in climate action. Often, the arts, humanities and social sciences are overlooked as a key solution to understanding climate change. Yet, only through understanding people and their communities can we make the most of local knowledge, local expertise, local experience and lived memories, and local impact of climate hazards, risks and exposure. The 12 climate stories we will present at COP26 are not only interesting, and fun, and nice to have. They are essential to building our capacity to speak about and share the things and places that matter most to us, in all the places that we live. Finding and sharing climate stories is part of our path to finding common ground for action on climate change.
