- August 2020 marks the 80th anniversary of the start of the Luftwaffe's intensive bombing campaign against Merseyside. After almost two years of attacks thousands of people would be killed or injured and the docks and towns lining the river would be battered, but not broken. This blog looks at the beginning of the Nazi's air war against Britain's largest and most vital west coast ports.
- Aimed at our younger volunteers, Crafting with CITiZAN is celebrating the joy of learning though hands on activities while talking about the impact of sea level change, coastal erosion on the coastline, and exploring coastal industries and lives. For International Youth Day, we are highlighting two videos which were released this years as part of the Festival of British Archaeology.
- Many Happy Returns Southport Pier! Opened this week a 160 years ago on the 2nd August 1860 Southport's famous pier has seen it's fair share of drama with fires, storms and tram car crashes. So we're celebrating the birthday of one of the oldest pleasure piers in the country with a quick trip down memory lane.
- A short account of the life of John Ellerthorpe, coined the "Hero of the Humber" in the 19th century because of his numerous life saving exploits and his philanthropic activity towards safety in and around Hulls docklands. Celebrating Yorkshire Day 2020.
- Liverpool is well known for its ferries that cross the Mersey, with the ferries now an important part of local identity. But did you know our other Northern Discovery Programme area was also once well known for its ferries? You won’t find a song about the Humber ferry either.
